Some Rhode Island sea Captains were involved in piracy as well as trading black slaves. people have romatic notions of pirates, but in truth pirates are thieves and robbers who work at sea. Rhode Island had reputations of welcoming pirates with respect.  For example William Kidd, was thought to have turned pirate, Kidd spent most of his time in Rhode Island, and was backed up by many rhode island merchants.  There were reasons why Rhode Islanders became a pirate haven.  Almost everyone gained from piracy, because pirates sold stolen items cheaply. Because of this people could save money by buying from them.  Shopkeepers usually liked having pirates around because they spent money freely.
